A Tiny Insect, A Big Solution to Community Waste

On May 21, 2026, Good Neighbors International Philippines, in partnership with Barangay San Isidro and the Municipality of Rodriguez, Rizal, successfully held a public consultation for the Black Soldier Fly (BSF) Project in Barangay San Isidro, Rodriguez, Rizal.
The BSF Project is an efficient and sustainable waste management initiative that uses the larvae of harmless Black Soldier Flies to process organic waste. Through this eco-friendly solution, food waste and other biodegradable materials are converted into high-protein feed for livestock and aquaculture, as well as organic fertilizer for farms and agricultural use.
The consultation officially opened with a message from Hon. Barangay Captain Jose Eric D. Ching, who expressed the barangay’s full support for the initiative. During the discussion, Ms. Emma Liwliwa S. Baradi-Medina, Unit Head of the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO), highlighted the municipality’s growing concern regarding organic waste management. She explained that waste collection challenges continue to affect several communities, largely due to delays and limitations in the current waste disposal system.
Ms. Baradi-Medina also emphasized that the municipality currently lacks the technology needed to efficiently process organic waste, despite large volumes of food waste being collected daily. She shared that when Good Neighbors introduced the opportunity for partnership through the BSF Project, the Municipality of Rodriguez immediately expressed its full support for the initiative as a sustainable solution for the community.
The public consultation was followed by a comprehensive technical orientation on the BSF Project led by Mr. Dexter Difuntorum, Manager of the Economic Development Department. The session encouraged meaningful discussions and active participation from residents and stakeholders, reflecting the community’s strong interest in the project and its potential impact.
The activity also highlighted possible partnerships and collaborations among Good Neighbors International Philippines, the Municipality of Rodriguez, and Barangay San Isidro to establish a more organized and efficient biodegradable waste collection system within the community.
The consultation concluded with optimism and strong community support for the project, reinforcing the importance of cooperation and shared responsibility in building a cleaner, more organized, and more sustainable community.
The activity was attended by Barangay Captain Jose Eric D. Ching, Kagawad Jhun Jhun P. Mitra, Kagawad Elisa Gumarang, Barangay Secretary Charlie Boy C. Labez, SK Chairperson Joanne A. Apao, representatives from the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO), Municipal Planning and Development Office (MPDO), Municipal Solid Waste Management Office (MSWMO), representatives from the Councilors’ offices, the Homeowners Association (HOA) Federation President, HOA officers from Centella Homes Subdivision and Farmville Neighborhood Association, and community members of Barangay San Isidro.
