The Big One: Training of Trainers Strengthens Community Disaster Preparedness
From September 14 to 16, 2026, Good Neighbors Philippines conducted The Big One: Training of Trainers, a three-day capacity building activity that equipped school personnel and disaster response partners with practical knowledge and skills in disaster preparedness, response, and community resilience.
On the first day, participants learned the basics of Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM), including disaster concepts, risk identification, and safety measures before, during, and after a disaster. The session was facilitated by Ms. Dale Frances Canezal, Global Emergency Coordinator.
Ms. Beverly Simon, Good Neighbors Philippines’ DRR Focal Officer, also discussed disaster-related laws and how these guide disaster preparedness and response efforts.
Day two focused on protecting children and families during emergencies.
Ms. Marieness F. Soliman, Officer-in-Charge of the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office, led the discussion on child protection and child-centered disaster response. Participants explored the specific needs and vulnerabilities of children during disasters and the importance of keeping their safety and rights at the center of response efforts.
The day also included a session on Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) facilitated by Ms. Ma. Fe Beatrix Otida, Registered Social Worker. The discussion highlighted the importance of safe and hygienic environments for children and families during and after disasters.
The final day focused on Psychosocial Support (PSS), facilitated by Ms. Beverly Simon.
Participants learned how disasters can affect the emotional and psychosocial well-being of children and other affected individuals. They were also introduced to simple activities that can help children manage stress, express their emotions, and cope with difficult experiences following a disaster.
The training was attended by 28 school personnel and representatives from the Barangay Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Offices (BDRRMO).
