From Functional Tent to Birthing Facility: A Shelter That Gave Hope
When a powerful earthquake struck Mindanao, communities in Sarangani faced damaged homes, disrupted public services, and limited access to essential facilities.
As part of its emergency response, Good Neighbors Philippines provided relief assistance to affected families, including food and essential non-food items. GNPH also provided functional tents to support hospitals whose facilities had been damaged or were no longer sufficient to meet the needs of the community.
In Sarangani, one of these tents was transformed into a birthing facility.
With the hospital facing challenges in providing maternal care within its regular facilities, the functional tent became a safe and dedicated space for pregnant women to receive medical attention and give birth.

More than temporary shelter, the tent provided privacy, safety, and dignity for mothers and their newborns during a time of uncertainty.
What began as a functional shelter became a place where new life could safely begin; showing how disaster response can go beyond immediate relief and help communities continue accessing essential services when they need them most.
In times of crisis, a shelter can become more than a roof. Sometimes, it can become a place where hope begins.
