PRIETOurism Project Turnover Marks New Chapter for Eco-Tourism in Prieto Diaz
December 12, 2025 — The PRIETOurism Project, a community-based eco-tourism initiative, was officially turned over by Good Neighbors International Philippines (GNIP) and Metrobank Foundation, Inc. to the SEAMANCOR Eco-Developers Cooperative Inc. (SEAMANCOR), marking a significant milestone in strengthening sustainable livelihoods and environmental conservation in Prieto Diaz.
The project aims to enhance SEAMANCOR’s eco-tourism operations by improving marine transportation facilities and strengthening organizational capacity. Through this partnership, GNIP and Metrobank Foundation support SEAMANCOR’s established services—including mangrove eco-tour guiding, events coordination, rentals, and catering—while expanding income-generating opportunities for its members and the wider community.
The PRIETOurism Project consists of two key components: Tour Capacity Enhancement, which provided six fiberglass boats, safety equipment, and marine first-aid kits to ensure safer and more efficient operations; and a Capacity-Building Program, which focused on marketing, promotion, and safety standards. Trainings were conducted in partnership with faculty members from Sorsogon State University, equipping the cooperative with skills to sustain and grow its eco-tourism initiatives.
Established in 1994, SEAMANCOR has long been a steward of Prieto Diaz’s mangrove forests under agreements with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and the local government. The project directly benefits 74 SEAMANCOR members and is expected to positively impact over 22,000 residents, reinforcing eco-tourism as a viable, community-driven livelihood while protecting coastal resources. This initiative demonstrates how collaboration can sustain livelihoods, strengthen local enterprises, and protect the environment.
